Free Veterans Day Printable for Kids: 2 Writing Activities to Say Thank You

A child writing on a printable Veterans Day letter template, featuring an American flag design and the text 'Dear Veteran, Thank you for...' with colorful pens nearby.

Veterans Day is one of those days that deserves more than a quick “Happy Veterans Day” post on social media.

It deserves a moment to stop, to remember, and to say thank you.

That is why I decided to make these Veterans Day printable’s completely free.

Not because they aren’t worth something, but because I don’t think saying thank you to the people who served our country should come with a price tag.

Our veterans have given us something that is incredibly easy to take for granted: the freedom to live our everyday lives. Many made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home. Others returned home carrying experiences and memories that most of us could never begin to imagine.

And sometimes, those stories were never told.

For this Veterans Day, I’ve created two free printable writing activities for kids. One is designed for younger children who are just learning to write, while the other is perfect for older kids who are ready to express their gratitude in more words.

These printable’s are a simple way to help children learn about Veterans Day and remind them why it’s so important to thank the men and women who have served our country.

My Grandfathers and My Veterans Day Memories

When I think about Veterans Day, I think about my grandfathers.

As a little girl, I was always so proud to show off both of them.

My paternal grandfather and my maternal grandfather were both drafted into the United States Army during World War II.

I was very young, and unfortunately, I never really got to hear my grandfathers talk about their experiences in the Army. Actually, I don’t remember hearing either one of them talk much about their time in the military at all.

As a child, I didn’t understand that. I just knew that my grandpas had served. I knew they wore the uniform, and I knew I was incredibly proud of them.

My paternal grandfather was part of the third wave at Normandy during World War II.

As a child, I couldn’t possibly understand what that meant. I certainly couldn’t comprehend the things he may have seen or experienced.

Now, as an adult, I find myself wishing I could sit down with him and ask a million questions.

What was it like?

What do you remember?

Were you scared?

What did you see?

What did you leave behind?

And perhaps most importantly, why didn’t you ever tell us?

I may never have the answers to those questions. Perhaps those memories were too difficult to talk about, or perhaps he simply wanted to move forward with his life. I can only imagine what those experiences must have been like.

But I do have the memories of being that little girl who was so incredibly proud to say, “That’s my Grandpa. He was in the Army.”

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve thought more about how many veterans came home and simply went on with their lives without talking about what they had seen. How many carried memories that were too difficult to put into words? How many stories have never been told?

It makes me appreciate their service even more.

I wish I could go back and ask my grandfathers those questions. I wish I could hear their stories in their own words.

Today, I can honor them by remembering their service and by teaching the next generation to appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans everywhere.

Why I’m Making These Veterans Day Printable Free

I make printable’s because I love creating things that people can use and enjoy. But sometimes, I think something is more important than making a sale.

This is one of those times.

I wanted to create something that families, teachers, homeschoolers, and classrooms could use to help children understand the meaning behind Veterans Day.

And I wanted it to be free.

Because thanking the people who served our country shouldn’t be about whether someone has a few dollars to spend on a printable.

This is my little way of saying thank you.

Thank you to the veterans who served.

Thank you to the families who waited for their loved ones to come home.

Thank you to those who never got to come home.

Thank you to the veterans who carry memories they may never share.

And thank you to the generations of service members who have sacrificed so that the rest of us can live our everyday lives.

I know a free printable is a small gesture compared to what our veterans have given. But I hope it can help start a conversation, encourage a child to ask questions, or give someone a simple way to show their appreciation.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures can carry a lot of meaning.

Two Free Veterans Day Writing Printable’s for Kids

I created two versions of these Veterans Day printable’s so children with different ages and writing abilities can participate.

Whether your child is just learning to form letters or is ready to write a more thoughtful message, there is an option for them.

Version 1: Free Veterans Day Printable for Younger Kids

The first version is designed for younger children who are just beginning to learn how to write.

It’s a simple activity that allows little learners to practice their handwriting while learning about Veterans Day and expressing their appreciation for the people who have served our country.

This version is a great fit for preschoolers, kindergarteners, and early elementary students who are still developing their writing skills.

Parents and teachers can use it to introduce the meaning of Veterans Day in an age-appropriate way and help children understand that saying thank you is an important way to show appreciation.

Version 2: Free Veterans Day Printable for Older Kids

The second version is designed for older children who are ready to express their thoughts in more detail.

It gives them an opportunity to think about what Veterans Day means, why we honor veterans, and how they can express their gratitude to someone who has served.

This version works well for elementary school students who are ready to write a longer message or reflect more deeply on the meaning of service and sacrifice.

I love the idea of children taking a little time to think about the people behind the uniforms and putting their appreciation into their own words.

How to Use Your Free Veterans Day Printable’s

These printable’s can be used in so many different ways, whether you’re a parent, teacher, or homeschooler.

Here are a few ideas:

  • At home: Print a page and talk with your children about what Veterans Day means and why we celebrate it.
  • In the classroom: Use the writing activities as part of a Veterans Day lesson or morning work.
  • For homeschool: Pair the printable’s with a short lesson about American history and the meaning of military service.
  • For a veteran in your family: Let your child complete the activity and give it to a grandparent, parent, relative, or family friend who served.
  • For a community celebration: Use the printable’s as part of a Veterans Day gathering or appreciation activity.

If you have a veteran in your family, this can also be a wonderful opportunity to look through old photographs, talk about family history, and preserve stories for future generations.

And if a veteran doesn’t feel comfortable talking about their experiences, that’s okay, too. We can honor their service without asking them to share anything they aren’t ready to discuss.

Sometimes, simply letting someone know that their service is remembered and appreciated is enough.

A Simple Way to Teach Children About Gratitude

I think it’s important that children understand Veterans Day is about more than a day off school or seeing flags displayed around town.

It’s about the people who have served our country and the sacrifices made by them and their families.

Many veterans experienced things we may never fully understand. Some lost friends. Some returned home with memories they carried for the rest of their lives. And far too many never made it home at all.

We don’t have to understand every detail of their experiences to recognize their courage, appreciate their service, and thank them for what they have given.

If you have a veteran in your family, ask them about their service if they’re comfortable sharing. Write down their stories. Save those photographs. Let your children know who served in your family and why their service matters.

I wish I had more stories from my two grandfathers. I wish I knew more about their time in the Army and what their experiences were like.

But I will always remember how proud I was of them.

And I hope that by creating these free printable’s, I can help another family teach their children to feel that same appreciation for the veterans in their own lives.
