There are some recipes that instantly take you back to childhood, and these sprinkle cookies do exactly that for me.
Growing up, I loved visiting my Grandma in Jennings, Louisiana. Every now and then, we’d make the short drive over to Crowley, and if we were lucky, we’d stop at Ruddock’s Bakery. The moment we walked through the door, I already knew exactly what I wanted—a sprinkle cookie.
Not just any sprinkle cookie.
These cookies were soft but firm, buttery, perfectly chewy, and completely covered in colorful nonpareil sprinkles. They were simple, but somehow absolutely perfect. They became one of those childhood memories that stayed with me long after the bakery visit was over.
For years I’ve tried to recreate that same cookie, and I think this recipe comes incredibly close.
These cookies have become one of my signature recipes. Every Christmas, I bring them to our annual cookie exchange, and they’re always one of the first cookies to disappear. I like to joke that they’re the only reason I keep getting invited every year. (Just kidding, Jobeth!)
The best part? They aren’t just Christmas cookies.
Swap the sprinkle colors and they’re perfect for birthdays, baby showers, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, Halloween, school parties, or just because you need a little sweetness in your day.
One bite and you’ll understand why these cookies have been a family favorite for generations.

- Loaded with colorful nonpareil sprinkles
- Easy enough for beginner bakers
- Perfect for holidays and celebrations all year long
- Freezes beautifully
- Ready in about 30 minutes
Ingredients

- 1 cup salted butter, softened (2 sticks)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional—omit for nut allergies)
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 bottle nonpareil sprinkles
You’ll Also Need
- #40 cookie scoop (about 1.6 inches)
- Cookie sheet
- Mixing bowls
- Cooling rack
How to Make the Perfect Sprinkle Cookies
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and creamy.
Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until fully combined.
Step 2

In a separate bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together:
- Flour
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
Slowly add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
Step 3

Using a #40 cookie scoop, scoop the dough into even portions.
Pour the nonpareil sprinkles into a cereal-sized bowl.
Drop each scoop of dough into the sprinkles and gently roll until completely coated.
Tip: Don’t press the sprinkles into the dough. Let them sit naturally on the outside so the cookies stay bright and colorful after baking.
Step 4

Place the cookie dough balls onto a cookie sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie.
Using the bottom of a flat drinking glass, gently press each cookie just enough to slightly flatten it. This also helps seal the sprinkles onto the cookie.
Step 5
Bake for 10 minutes.
The cookies should look just set around the edges while remaining soft in the center.
Allow them to cool on the cookie sheet for about 2 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Tiffany’s Tips
- Use room-temperature butter for the softest cookies.
- Don’t overbake! They continue baking as they cool.
- Use nonpareil sprinkles instead of jimmies for the classic bakery look.
- Change the sprinkle colors for every holiday throughout the year.
Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Final Thoughts
Every time I make these cookies, I’m reminded of those trips to Crowley with my family and the excitement of walking into Ruddock’s Bakery.
Food has a way of preserving memories, and this recipe does exactly that for me.
I hope these become part of your family’s traditions too—whether it’s Christmas, a birthday party, or simply a Tuesday afternoon when you’re craving something sweet.
And whatever you do…
Don’t forget to enjoy one while it’s still warm. Trust me—that first warm bite is pure childhood magic.
